Something I will never understand

 

It is hard to fathom the extent of the horrific tragedy that took place in Nepal when a torrent of water, mud, and debris wiped out so many villages along the Trishuli River on August 26. The videos and photos only provide glimpses. We saw people running for their lives or trapped in homes, and we saw how what happened when they were swept away.

Many people on social media have expressed shock, dismay, sadness, and empathy for the victims. And much of this has taken the form of prayer.

Prayer assumes that there is a supreme being who can intercede on behalf of the people we are praying for. Or am I misunderstanding what prayer is about?

If there is such a supreme being, how and why did this thing happen in the first place? Was anyone praying beforehand to ask this supreme being not to destroy homes and families? 

If there is a god who is involved in what happens on earth, and that god made this happen, why would anyone continue to worship that god and hope they are listening to prayers?

If there is a god who is completely uninvolved, what's the point of praying?

If you believe in God, can you explain this to me? I say I will never understand, but I would like to know where your faith comes from and how you cling to it even when things like this happen.
